Moments That Matter
Sometimes all it takes is someone willing to listen.
Moments That Matter is a monthly guided storytelling program. In each session, participants bring a few personal photographs and share the stories behind them. It helps those who live alongside one another feel more known, more connected, and a little more a part of their community.
The photo is just the start. The real gift is connection.
More than looking back
People can live side by side for years and still know very little about each other.
You might know a name, or a face from the hallway, but never hear about the places someone has been, the people they loved, or the work they were proud of. Moments That Matter makes room for those stories. With a few photos and some real listening, people move past small talk and start to truly know one another.
Why photographs?
A photo is an easy place to start.
It's hard to sum up a whole life, but easy to pick one picture and tell the story behind it. A photo can bring back how a time felt, who mattered, and who you were then, and since each person picks their own and shares only what they want, it never feels like too much.
Each session is small, welcoming, and open to everyone, with a gentle structure. It starts with a simple prompt to set an easy tone. One at a time, people share the story behind a photo, and then the group is welcome to ask their own questions too.
No one needs to be good at telling stories, and no one is put on the spot. People just bring pictures they care about, and the stories come on their own.
One photo. One story. And something no one knew before.
What participants experience
Moments That Matter gives people a chance to:
It's not just about remembering
The goal is to leave feeling closer, to your own story, and to the people around you.
Remembering is part of it, but it's not the point. By the end, people feel closer, and something deeper starts to grow:
The moment that showed us what was possible
“I’ve known you for five years, and I never knew that about you.
One resident, to the woman beside her
They already knew each other. Now they knew something that mattered.
A note from Margaux
Program Facilitator
I became a photographer because I love how a photo can capture a moment and give you something to look back on.
But over time, I started to realize that photos can do something else too. They make it easier to start a conversation. Asking someone to tell you about their life can feel like a lot, but asking about a photo is easy. There is already a story there.
That is where Moments That Matter came from. I wanted to use photos as a way for people to share a little about themselves and get to know each other better.
My favorite part is seeing what happens once someone starts sharing. People ask questions, find things they have in common, and start talking in a way they might not have otherwise.
To me, that is what a photo can be. Not just something you look at, but a way into someone’s story.
